The Power of PSY

The Power of PSY

If you don’t think there is power in music I dare you to do the following: Go to a crowded place (say a mall) hook up a speaker to your ipad, hold it out in front of you and play one of the following songs as loud as possible; “Ice Ice Baby” by Vanilla Ice, “Hammer Time” by M.C. Hammer, “Staying Alive” by The BeeGees or more appropriately the new hit by PSY, titled “Gentleman”. Guaranteed someone will start to dance, sing or move to the beat.

Now, most people in the crowd will denounce liking the song and may even use words like “stupid” or “Joke” when describing the artist. Yet, they danced, they tapped their feet, hell they even started singing alone word for word. Maybe they secretly enjoy it and just can’t bring themselves around to admit it. I think it’s the tickle factor.
Yes, I just made that up! Let me explain what I mean. Take anybody and tickle them in the right spot and you will elicit a response. Even the best of us, struggling to keep a straight face will eventually cave and let out a chuckle. It’s natural. It’s physical and in the end we find ourselves enjoying it. That’s what’s happening with PSY today. His music makes us move. It elicits movement and almost always a smile. We fight it at first and will probably never admit to liking it, but in the end we find it a happy release. I mean come on, nothing beats dancing through your house in your underwear to “Gangnam Style” on a Saturday morning.
Whatever you think about PSY or those of the past like Vanilla Ice, you cannot deny the fact that they play a part in the world of music. Like being tickled, it may be uncomfortable at first, but before you know it you’re singing along and actually enjoying it…..Oppan Gangnam Style!
