Rixton Dazzle With Their Debut Single/EP “Me and My Broken Heart”

At the end of last year we stumbled upon the Manchester boy band Rixton and their amusing (at times disturbing) music video for the song “Make Out”. Needless to say, it was hard not to laugh along and at the same time think, “these guys sound really good”.

Five months later and we think you should start practicing saying the name, Rixton. After hearing the bands debut single “Me And My Broken Heart”, which released this month, there is no doubt pop stations across the country will have it in their playlist before you know it. We’re in love with it already, which is why we’ve made it our Song of The Weekend for March 28th, 2014.

Rixton Me and My Broken Heart

It almost feels wrong to call the UK foursome of Jake Roche, Danny Wilkin, Lewi Morgan and Charley Bagnall, a boy band. No one ever used the phrase to describe our own US pop group Maroon 5, which Rixton lead singer Jake Roche holds vocal similarities too. So from here on out, we won’t. Their debut EP Me and My Broken Heart, which released on School Boy/Giant Little Man/Mad Love/Interscope Records March 18th, is much more than three tracks holding up a golden single. Two of the adjoining songs, the Ed Sheeran penned “Hotel Ceiling” and one of the bands favorites “Appreciated”, could easily follow as airplay releases themselves. It’s the kind of quality that should gain them a pretty strong footing here in the States, by the time their debut album drops later this year.

The official music video for Rixton’s title track premiered this week and is a far cry from the youthful antics of “Make Out”. Trading poolside and swinging naked, for classy suits and a very shady poker game, the young men demonstrate versatility both visually and musically. As drummer Lewi told MTV this month, “I don’t think we wanted to ever step away from that [‘Make Out’ video]. We more wanted to show everybody a different side of us. We are still a lot of fun.” It’s just one of the reasons we expect this band to not only hit if off this year, but stick around as well.
