Grey Worm Actor Raleigh Ritchie Sings “Stronger Than Ever” (Song of The Week)

No one will ever say that Jacob Anderson doesn’t have balls. Well, actually they will, but only when they refer to the character he plays on the HBO hit series, Game of Thrones. The 24 year old London actor, plays the Unsullied leader Grey Worm, who happens to be a eunuch. If you are not up on your history, that would be a male servant in the queens court who was “cut”, “snipped”, “fixed”, had his “stones” removed, to kill the sex drive so he wouldn’t screw with the queen; literally. Not only does Jacob have the kahunas to take on the task of speaking in low valyrian for his part on TV, he’s also been taking the stage for other reasons as well.

Outside of being one of the young handsome members of the cast of Game of Thrones, Jacob Anderson also takes on a different persona in real life; that of Raleigh Ritchie – singer, songwriter and rapper. His early year release, “Stronger Than Ever” from his EP Black and Blue, is starting to catch on outside of the UK and if you hear it just once, you’ll know why we’ve made it our Song of The Week. The inspiring track builds with Ritchie’s approachable rap styled verses and smooth R&B vocals during its chorus, to thumping percussion and a spine tingling climactic end.

Ritchie seems to enjoy the use of an alias when it comes to music, stating in interviews that writing as Raleigh gives him a freedom to actually be more of himself than as Jacob. The approach to each vocation is also different for the Londoner, being quoted as saying, “It (writing music) takes everything in my brain and like in my body to make music whereas acting is more kind of, it’s fun, so they’re very, they feel very different”. His focus and intensity on stage performing his top 40 song, “Stronger Than Ever”, is visual evidence that this is not just some side hobby to clear his head for the next role. It’s the real deal.

stronger than ever video still

The official video, directed by Ninian Doff, shows Raleigh as a man having a nervous breakdown. Sitting on a park bench in the UK, we see him struggling against his own personal hurricane, that only he can see and feel. It ties in perfectly with the rich lyrcial make up of the track, with several lines to love. Ritchie’s emotion is tangible as he sings about fighting to make it on his own, “And I fall, fall, fall when it all comes down, And I won’t be crushed by the weight of this town, I fall from the sky but I won’t fall forever, I fall, but when I rise I’ll be stronger than ever“.

It won’t be much longer before fans start to realize the two are the same person and it may not matter, each effort stands on its own. Choosing to use an alias, rather than ride on his fame as an actor when it comes to music…well, that takes balls.
