Downton Abbey Is Back This Coming January For Season 5

“Four wonderful seasons of Downton Abbey, each drawing a larger audience than the last, and now Series 5…This is a television dream come true!” Yes, it’s the kind of excitement you’d expect from fans of the award winning British costume drama; only this was declared by Masterpiece executive producer, Rebecca Eaton. There is reason for glee inside the camp of the Julian Fellowes created series, readying to air its number five season this coming January; ten Emmys®, two Golden Globes®, and two Screen Actors Guild Awards®, with Season 4 recently receiving 12 Emmy® nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series.

Fans of the show will be chomping at the bit over the next four months, ready to find out what has become of Mary and her many suitors. The tough, opinionated character that drew fans in on season one, was back to her old self in season 4 after the sudden death of her husband Matthew Crawley. Then there’s the secret life of Lady Edith and her new baby, the continuing war between Thomas and Bates and the always entertaining life within the kitchen.

Change is inevitable as well, within the cast and in the world around them. Expect to see some new faces and guest appearance from Harriet Walter (Atonement), reprising her role as Lady Shackleton, and Peter Egan (Death at a Funeral), who returns as Lord Flintshire, together with completely new characters played by Richard E. Grant (Girls), Anna Chancellor (The Hour), and Rade Sherbedgia (24). It’s also 1924, with a new Prime Minister and the wheels of progress continuing to bring new inventions and electronic contraptions into Mr. Carson’s world. This time, it’s the radio.

The US fan base has continued to grow with each passing season, seeing Season 4 draw an average audience of 13.2 million viewers, making it the top PBS drama of all time and one of the highest-rated dramas now on American television. Executive Producer Gareth Neame says, “Our cast and crew have been immersed in the world of Downton for the last five years and it is a thrill to have seen it grow in popularity in the United States to become one of the most watched shows on television. We’re currently hard at work on season 5 and viewers can expect all the highs and lows, the heady mix of drama, romance and comedy and plenty of new surprises.”
