On TV: PBS’ The Manners Of Downton Abbey With Historian Alastair Bruce

I was worried they were going to shake hands with gloves on; disaster“. Those are the words of Alastair Bruce from PBS’ upcoming documentary, The Manners of Downton Abbey: A Masterpiece Special – airing Sunday, January 4th at 10 pm. The perfect companion to the return of the hit British drama series, which airs the fist episode of it’s fifth season, one hour before. Fans of the show and newcomers alike (hope you spent time catching up), will enjoy following along with Downton’s historical advisor and host of the special, Alastair Bruce.

The one hour documentary, takes viewers behind the scenes of the British period TV series, for a look at what it takes to insure everything is accurate, down to the most minuscule detail. Fans will enjoy hearing from the cast as they share, (in normal clothes, mind you) what it’s like playing the parts of an upstairs aristocrat and downstairs servant in a post-Edwardian era. Included in all the great commentary and lessons on etiquette, are glimpses into the filming process inside Highclere Castle.

In typical Masterpiece fashion, everything is done smart in The Manners of Downtown Abbey. Author and historian Alastair Bruce is the perfect host, proving a treasure trove of knowledge, while demonstrating a tangible passion for his very important role. As actor Tom Cullen, who plays Lord Anthony “Foyle” Gillingham and suitor to Lady Mary puts it, “Alastair literally taught me everything. How to tie my shoelaces. How to gesture. How to stand. Ride a horse“.
