One Direction Don’t Need Zayn To Break Records With ‘Drag Me Down’

One Direction Don’t Need Zayn To Break Records With ‘Drag Me Down’

As soon as One Direction dropped their new single “Drag Me Down” last week, we knew it was going to be a hit. The first song to be released since former member Zayn Malik left the group, is living proof that the remaining four can not only keep things going, but break records as well.

‘Drag Me Down’ wasted no time making history. After its surprise release on Friday July 31st, it took less than sixty minutes for the song to reach number one on iTunes. Eventually hitting the top spot on the music site in over 80 countries.

Itunes wasn’t the only place the funky-pop single reached number one status faster than any other song in its history – it broke the record over at Spotify as well. The single, which was released without any promotion, was streamed over 4 million times in one day on the service globally.

New Song Drag Me Down

Continuing their trend, “Drag Me Down” sees One Direction delivering a more mature sound, that has the potential to reach a much larger audience. The fact that the track went to number one so fast, also shows that it was good straight out of the gate. There was no need for this one to “grow” on you.

There’s been much said about the future of the former boy band (they are men now), since Zayn shocked the world with his departure. Each album has critics and fans wondering if it will be their last. Which is a shame when you consider that to date, they’ve never released one that isn’t a hit; or breaks records.

Later this year will see the groups fifth studio album released, the first without their former member. The band stated shortly after Zayn leaving that they would not be seeking a replacement and the response to the first track off that upcoming LP is proof they don’t need one. If the rest of the album is anything like “Drag Me Down”, there will be more records to break and history made.

Even Zayn gave his approval of the song tweeting, ‘Proud of my boys the new single is sick. Big love. 🙂 x.‘ on Saturday. Which is good for everyone involved in the end.
