Adele’s New Song “Hello” Shakes Up The World!

I thought awaiting the new Bond and Star Wars films was going to be the entertainment highlight of my year; until Adele dropped her brand new single, “Hello” this morning. All the amazement, awe and spine tingling response I’d reserved for the silver screen, came via a 27 year old British singer instead. Adele is back and the music world, is right again.

November 20th will see the release of Adele’s new album appropriately titled, 25. The first record from the Grammy Award winning singer/songwriter in four years. To say there could be a bit of pressure following her previous album 21, would be an understatement. That LP went on to become the biggest selling album of the 21st century.

After teasing the world with a snipped of her new single “Hello” during a recent episode of the X-Factor Uk, Adele dropped both the single and an official video on Friday, October 23rd.

Watch the official video for Adele’s new single “Hello”:

Without trying to judge an entire record off of just one song, “Hello” is pretty much the Adele we’ve come to know and love. Which no fan should be complaining about. Tying into that thought the length of time between records, debuting a song not far from what’s expected is a smart move. With word that the new venture houses several tracks with top name collaborations, there’s no reason to think there won’t be surprises.

I’d love to be able to write that “Hello” demonstrates some new level of maturity and range for Adele; but that would be an insult to her previous work. One thing that grabbed my attention the first time I heard “Chasing Pavements” back in 2008, from her debut album which she penned at the age of 19 – was her amazing maturity both lyrically and vocally. Older now for sure since she first hit the music scene, Adele is still in firm control of both her range and emotional expression in song.

What is new, is the theme of “Hello”. There will be much speculation as to who or what Adele is singing about in the moving ballad, but the one clear thing is that it’s the singer whose taking the blame for a broken heart this time around. “Hello from the outside / At least I can say that I’ve tried to tell you I’m sorry / for breaking your heart”, she sings in the second part of the songs chorus.

The music video, from Canadian director Xavier Dolan shows the “Skyfall” singer returning to an old home that has been closed up for some time. Uncovering dusty sheets from the furniture and looking over items that have remained as they were since she last left – could be a slight acknowledgment on her part to her fans, over how long it’s been since we last heard from her.

There’s a guy, memories of a relationship in its good times and bad, and yet even with the apparent regret – no evidence of going back. Is it a former relationship? Her own previous self? The mystery, makes it all the more amazing.

Time to dust off that number one spot; Adele is back.
