Why Is Deadpool Kissing Wayne Rooney On The Head And Calling Him Adorable?

Deadpool is taking over and this month 20th Century Fox kicked it up a big notch by joining up with one of the world’s most popular football (soccer) clubs, Manchester United. In a video released by the studio, the Deadpool character is seen taking a penalty shot for the Red Devils as United players Ander Herrera, Juan Mata, Chris Smalling, David De Gea, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Wayne Rooney look on.

After making the goal, the team members gather around cheering the anti-hero as he embraces team captain Rooney; and then kisses him on the forehead.

Fans of both the newly released film and the world famous English soccer club may be wondering what’s going on. February the club released a statement announcing a new partnership between Man United and one of the most well-known names in film production and distribution, 20th Century Fox. According to the release, “throughout the season the club’s digital perimeter boards and post-match interview backdrops at Old Trafford will be used to promote films, such as Deadpool, X-Men: Apocalypse and Independence Day: Resurgence”.

The video featuring Deadpool marks the start of the venture and there’s no doubt after seeing it, the idea was a smart one. Right after the scene where he kisses Rooney’s head, Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool is seen waking up in bed and declaring, “Al, I had that weird Wayne Rooney dream again”.

Riding the Deadpool wave looks to be a smart move for the studio. United’s group managing director, Richard Arnold, comments: “This partnership is the first of its kind for the Club and 20th Century Fox. Last year in the UK alone, there were well over 150 million admissions to the cinema and like football, the film industry has unwavering global popularity and can be enjoyed by anyone.

“Both Manchester United and 20th Century Fox are leaders within our respective industries and we are delighted to be able to work with them in introducing each other to new audiences, creating unique content, such as the players’ recent encounter with Deadpool.“

Reynolds has turned the Deadpool character into a hot item in 2016 and his immersion into the anti-hero’s personality is maintained whether he’s doing a scene in the film, promoting testicular cancer awareness or scoring an important goal for MannyU. You can’t help but love seeing him clutching that X Men Wolverine doll as he’s startled from sleep and then commenting about Rooney, “He’s so adorable”.

No one knows just yet how effective the partnership between club and studio will be, but one thing is for sure – the inaugural video featuring Deadpool taking a penalty shot for Manchester United, has got us all looking twice.
