Friday’s Song: Tom Odell’s “Magnetised” (Official Video)

We’ve been touting English singer/songwriter Tom Odell for years now, ever since he first played his way into the music scene with his debut album Long Way Down, back in 2013. Today we’re excited to honor his latest album titled Wrong Crowd, by making the second single from that record “Magnetised”, our Song of The Day.

Tom’s unique style both vocally and musically, sets him apart from so many other artists today. Most of his songs have a very cinematic feel and when coupled with his rousing, emotionally driven piano play, it’s easy for the listener to get carried away to the thought of a lover or special moment in life.

New record from Tom Odell

Odell recently explained that story like focus in his creative process when speaking about the new album saying, “I wanted the songs to sound big and dramatic; big strings and melodies emphasizing the songs further – rich in musicality and holding nothing back. The album follows a narrative of a man held at ransom by his childhood, yearning for it, yearning for nature- a desire for innocence in this perverse world in which he now lives. It’s a fictional story but the emotions and feelings are obviously ones I have felt – though the stories are elaborated and exaggerated. I wanted to create a world with a heightened sense of reality.”

The official music video from Director George Belfield is the perfect visual accompaniment to Tom’s emotional single. Fitting the cinematic nature of “Magnetised”, Odell seems at home both behind the camera and in character and leaves you wishing these were clips from some full-length film.

We’re hoping the music from Odell’s new album and songs like “Magnetised”, will finally help get him the kind of exposure here in the US, that he deserves.
