What’s The Movie “Silence” With Andrew Garfield About?

Andrew Garfield is turning himself into Hollywood gold this year, with two critically acclaimed films hitting theaters within a month of each other. First it was Hacksaw Ridge from director Mel Gibson and this December, the 33-year-old Amercian-British actor stars in the Martin Scorsese historical drama, Silence.

Silence is a film from Paramount Pictures which is based on the 1966 novel of the same name by Shūsaku Endō. The film “tells the story of two Christian missionaries (Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver) who face the ultimate test of faith when they travel to Japan in search of their missing mentor (Liam Neeson) – at a time when Christianity was outlawed and their presence forbidden”.

The film has been a planned project of Scorsese’s for over 20 years. When asked by Deadline back in 2013 why he continued to stick with it after all this time, he said, “Silence is just something that I’m drawn to in that way. It’s been an obsession, it has to be done and now is the time to do it. It’s a strong, wonderful true story..”

Who stars in the movie “Silence”?

Andrew Garfield, Adam Driver, Tadanobu Asano, Ciarán Hinds and Liam Neeson. This is the film that Driver and Neeson lost all that weight for.

The film has already won awards from American Film Institute and National Board of Review in the category of Top Ten Films of The Year.

The book of the same name, written by Japanese author Shūsaku Endō was published in 1966. According to Goodreads, Silence was “winner of the 1966 Tanizaki Prize, Silence is Shusaku Endo’s most highly acclaimed novel and a classic of its genre”.

The Plot (Amazon):

Seventeenth-century Japan: Two Portuguese Jesuit priests travel to a country hostile to their religion, where feudal lords force the faithful to publicly renounce their beliefs. Eventually captured and forced to watch their Japanese Christian brothers lay down their lives for their faith, the priests bear witness to unimaginable cruelties that test their own beliefs. Shusaku Endo is one of the most celebrated and well-known Japanese fiction writers of the twentieth century, and Silence is widely considered to be his great masterpiece.
