The Voice Season 5 Had Another Great Night In Week One

The second night of week one on The Voice wasn’t as memorable talent wise as the first, but there were a couple performers that stood out as serious competition. As we discovered following the first night of contestants, several of the singers have already either recorded records, written music or performed on stage. Caroline Pennell from Monday’s episode was so good, we featured her original single “Nobody’s Home” as our song of the day on Thursday. Her 5 track EP was a self released effort back in January of this year. Tuesday night had a few more contestants with some experience in performing.

One of the biggest surprises for the judges was when they found out contestant E.G. Daily, had acted along side Pee-Wee Herman and voiced the character Tommy Pickles on The Rugrats. I guess the night didn’t allow for her to run down the mile long laundry list of voice overs, acting roles and even her #1 Dance club single back in 1986. She performed Faith Hill’s hit “Breathe” and chose Blake as her coach.

The Jamaican born Tessanne Chin who caught the attention of all four judges, sang a stirring rendition of Pink’s “Try” and was told by Adam Levine “You could easily win The Voice this year“. The Reggae recording artists was open about using music as her “bread and butter”. She’s released one album and five singles as well as opened for Patti Labelle and Gladys Knight. Adam was the lucky pick during this round.

Because of you, I’m officially excited about season 5 of The Voice right now“. Those words were spoken by Blake Shelton following the performance of our favorite for the night, 19 year old Minnesota native, Holly Henry. A sucker for unique voices, Shelton turned his chair for the young singer after just 4 words were sung. The experienced judge has won the competition as coach three times already. Pushing her to choose him he told the singer, “Let’s get together and win this freakin thing“; she obliged and team Blake scored again.

Holly Henry wasn’t the only one with the unique sound on Tuesday nights episode. Jonny Gray, a former Air Force MP delivered a rocking “All These Things That I’ve Done” by the Killers. He didn’t turn all four of the judges like Henry, but he had an immediate bond with CeeLo Green, choosing him in the end. It will be interesting to see how far he gets in the competition. He has also released his own EP and a channel on ReverbNation.

The Voice is proving again to be very strong this year. All four of the judges seem super focused on sifting through, to find the best of the best for their respective teams. Blake Shelton’s winning history seems to have the bigger pull and fellow coaches like CeeLo Green are desperate to beat him this time around. The most memorable moment of the night was watching Holly Henry’s little brother cry as the judges began turning their chairs for his big sister. I wouldn’t be surprised if The Voice holds top spot again this season. Share your thoughts below.
