The Sing-Off Winners Pentatonix Might Be The Reason For Its Return

If you don’t remember the NBC show The Sign-Off, it may be because it wasn’t on last year and that it is a music competition for ‘a cappella’ groups. You may also be surprised to know the show originally aired back in 2009 and featured judges like Nicole Scherzinger. The fact that you don’t know of it, may have been the reason the network decided to pull the plug after Season 3 ended.

The Sing-Off

Surprise, more than a year later and the a cappella competition is back. This season, production is being joined by the genius behind shows like Survivor, Mark Burnett and his One Three Media. Not sure why they cancelled or why the desire to return, except for the fact that last seasons winners, Pentatonix, are getting the kind of attention that any network would love to have.

After the release of their cover of Daft Punk’s hit “Get Lucky” just a month ago, the video has been viewed over 25 million times! The five member a cappella group also have over 3 million subscribers. When they drop a video on their YouTube channel, it usually goes viral in minutes.

Off the cuff, you say the words “a cappella” and most music lovers will cringe. But groups and YouTubers like Pentatonix, are helping to change the status quo and make it very attractive. Painted faces are a big help as well.

As the competition begins on NBC tonight, get into the mood by watching last seasons winner’s Pentatonix perform “Get Lucky”. This my friends, is not your grand-mom’s a cappella.

Pentatonix have recorded and released three EP’s since their win, with their 2012 debut EP, PTX Vol. 1, charting at #14 on the Billboard 200, and their 2013 release, PTX Vol. 2, debuting at #10 on the Billboard 200. They have also released the holiday extended play titled, PTXmas on November 12, 2012. In just a few days they will begin their world tour.
