Downton Abbey Season Six Production Begins 2015

Downton Abbey Season Six production will begin early 2015, according to Masterpiece Executive Producer Rebecca Eaton. In a statement on the new season of the hit British TV series, which airs in the States on PBS she said, “Good news! Just as our audience settles in for the beloved Crawley family drama, we can announce that Season 6 will arrive a year later. How lucky can you get?”

Fans in the UK have already seen the most recent season, including its annual Christmas special. Appearing on Masterpiece on PBS, American fans are held to waiting it out to the first week of the new year to catch up. The announcement of a new season for Downton Abbey means things are still looking good for the series, based on the fictional Crawley family.

Viewership and social media stats have soared since Downton Abbey launched in January 2011. Season 4 drew an average audience of 13.2 million viewers, making it the top PBS drama of all time and one of the highest-rated dramas now on American television. Carnival’s Managing Director Gareth Neame, Executive Producer of Downton Abbey, said, “We have had an amazing reaction to the story lines, acting and production values of Downton Abbey this year and the whole team is thrilled to be moving ahead with a new season of the show. This will provide audiences with a fresh opportunity to see what will befall our much loved characters.”

Downton Abbey, Season 5 completed its run in the UK on Sunday, November 9th. Season 5 will premiere on MASTERPIECE on PBS on Sunday, January 4, 2015.
