Are You Watching: ‘Vicious’ Holiday Special on PBS This Christmas Starring Ian McKellen

The two main characters are gay and old. The show runs along like a 70’s sitcom. The jokes are corny and the cast is small. These may either be the reason you never gave the PBS British series ‘Vicious‘ a chance or why you stuck it out for season one. TV audiences are funny nowadays, what middle aged viewers may consider a “low-budget” series, or outdated, are being heavily supported by younger audiences both on the television set and through services like Netflix. Especially British comedies.

Vicious, which premiered here in the USA via PBS in June of this year, tells the story of partners Freddie (Ian McKellen) and Stuart (Derek Jacobi), who have lived together in a small central London flat for nearly 50 years. It may feel alot like a gay version of All In The Family to those over forty, with the partners constantly picking each other apart and holding on to petty slights for decades. Freddie and Stuart are always at each other’s throats, cracking snide remarks aimed at the other’s age, appearance and flaws.

The show has already started filming season 2 in the UK and will air sometime in 2015. Fans and newcomers can catch up via iTunes or Netflix (DVD Only) prior to the upcoming Holiday special on Thursday, December 25, 2014, 9:30-10:00 p.m. ET.

The crew are back in the living room of the quarreling partners, for a Christmas get together filled with snide remarks, great British humour and a game of Truth or Dare. Critics have had mixed reviews since the show aired last year in the UK and following it’s premiere here in the US. If you’re the type that has found yourself caught up and laughing along to past British favorites like As Time Goes By, One Foot In The Grave and the like – you’ll catch on to ‘Vicious’ quite easily. We enjoyed the holiday episode and can’t get enough of Sir Ian McKellen as the washed up thespian Freddie.

Still, it’s always interesting to know – Are You Watching?
