Monica Bellucci Is Bond’s Older Woman In Spectre

Bond 24, now known as Spectre, has created a stir among fans ever since director Sam Mendes, revealed both the title and cast this past December in London. That buzz across the internet had nothing to do with the return of Ralph Fiennes as ‘M’, Ben Whishaw as ‘Q’ or even Skyfall’s newcomer, the attractive Naomie Harris as Eve Moneypenny. No one even had an issue or overly excited interest in the upcoming films soon to be Bond Girl, Léa Seydoux. Who is causing all the chatter around the 24th installment of the Bond franchise? Her name is Monical Bellucci and she is the oldest actress to play one of James Bond’s “Girls”; ever.

After 53 years and 23 films, Monica Bellucci takes the prize for being the oldest actress to play one of the famous MI6 agent’s, well…female co-stars…ladies…oh hell, Girls! Her fellow co-star Léa Seydoux, who will most likely end up in bed with the buff Daniel Craig (who is 46), trails behind 21 years at the age of 29. Up until the cast announcement on December 4th, the oldest actress to play the role was Honor Blackman at 39 – she also had the most memorable name, Pussy Galore in 1964’s, Goldfinger.

Before anyone jumps to conclusions on the choice to cast Monica Bellucci, we should first establish a few things about Bond Girls. They need to be attractive, look good in a bathing suite, stunning in an evening dress and be the kind of woman the super spy would risk his life to bed. Yes, it all sounds sexist and misogynistic – because it is, at least if the franchise is going to stick to the original theme of the books. But as true fans will know, and more so in recent films, the ones he’s really interested in, are smart.

If we go by these traits, age really isn’t a factor. Until of course Bond starts to seduce women old enough to be his mother. So, it seems a bit disrespectful that anyone would focus on Monica Belluci’s age, when the Italian actress and fashion model fits the bill; to a very experienced ‘T’. Smart, sexy, alluring and sure to come off on screen as someone who can stand toe to toe with Mr Bond in the area of intelligence. As far as the British agent having a desire to sway her into his lair; well, just look at her – 50 is the new 30.

Monica Anna Maria Bellucci has been acting since the 90’s and has appeared in over 50 films from Italy to the US. Prior to that she was modelling at 13, which led her to Milan. She’s appeared in campaigns for fashion elite’s like Dolce & Gabbana and Elle. American movie goers may remember her in Bram Stoker’s Dracula, alongside Bruce Willis in Tears of The Sun, The Matrix Reloaded or as Mary Magdalene in Mel Gibson’s The Passion of The Christ. She has been nominated for awards multiple times, as well as winning Italy’s Golden Globe. Empire magazine placed her as number 21, in their The Sexiest Characters In Cinema for her role in The Matrix and again as #37 on The 100 Sexiest Movie Stars 2013 – stating, “Boasting a combination of classically stunning looks and the sort of laser concentration that you can’t help but be attracted to.” (E).

The reason for casting the more experienced actress for the role has yet to be revealed. Bond films are always getting better and more recently with the addition of both Mendes and Daniel Craig as Bond, are reaching a much larger audience than just men. It could be that the inclusion of Monica Bellucci is part of expanding that demographic even more. Either way, it’s new territory for the perpetual “30’s something” Bond and his loose ways.

Monica will play the character, Lucia Sciarra in “Spectre”. It is unclear what exactly she will be and do in the film, but we can deduce a few important things. First, Sam Mendes introduced her as an official “Bond Girl”. That usually means the agent will be seduced by, seduce or have some sort of sexual encounter with her in the movie. Some reports have her as the love interest of the new baddie. The second item to note, is that most women who go to bed with Bond, end up in a body bag. In other words, you’re not part of a sequel.

Time will tell if this opens the door for more mature woman like herself to take on the role of a Bond Girl in future films, but one thing is for certain – she’s already got our attention and filming has only just begun.

The new James Bond film, Spectre is due in theaters November 6th, 2015.
