Box Office: San Andreas Takes Number One, Tomorrowland Struggles

Dwayne Johnson looks to have come into his own this year, with his latest movie San Andreas, taking the number one spot at the box office for the week ending May 31st. The Warner Bros. action film about an earthquake that hits California along the San Andreas fault, raked in over $54.6 million domestically during it’s opening weekend. The result slaps critic reviews in the face for now, who gave the movie a low rating and has it reaching higher in sales than previously expected.

Disney’s much anticipated but poorly received film Tomorrowland, hung in at the number three spot, seeing another $14.3 million added to its $63.6 million total since hitting theaters last week (May 15). Starring George Clooney, the fantasy film has a long way to go to get back its $190 million dollar budget.

Avengers: Age of Ultron, the favorite offspring from the Disney studios right now remained strong in fifth place, according to RENTRAK. The Marvel/Disney super-hero flick, added another $11 million to its huge total take-in of over $427 million, in the U.S. and Canada.
