Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation Review: Watch Out Bond!

Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation Review: Watch Out Bond!

Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation hit theaters this week and oh, what a surprise! Visit any local cinema and you’ll find moviegoers cheering and laughing along, to Paramount Pictures latest installment in the Mission Impossible franchise. Tom Cruise and company delivered a mid-Summer action movie, that not only satisfies those awaiting the upcoming James Bond film later this Fall; it also gives it a run for its money.

The Christopher McQuarrie directed film comes off more like a reboot, than another lackluster installment. As one moviegoer stated leaving the theater, “what I liked is that you didn’t need to watch all the others to follow along, it was great!“. Applause from the crowd at the movies end, is just the kind of thing you look for from a Summer blockbuster.

Don’t expect to notice glimpses of stunt people in Rogue Nation either, both Cruise and his female co-star Rebecca Ferguson performed their own. The 31 year old Swedish actress delivers the kind of action and sex appeal, that is both captivating and believable. Their onscreen chemistry and her solid performance will leave you hoping for her return in a future installment. The Golden Globe nominated actress is so good at being both beautiful and bad ass at the same time, that giving her her own spy film may be something Paramount should consider.

Returning cast members Simon Pegg, Jeremy Renner and Ving Rhames complete the IMF ensemble, with newcomer Alec Baldwin fitting in nicely alongside the alumni, as CIA director Alan Hunley.

Tom Cruise breathes new life into IMF agent Ethan Hunt, with kick ass action scenes (that motorcycle chase was a favorite) and just the right amount of humor. In fact, one of the memorable things you walk away with after watching MI: Rogue Nation, is how often you found yourself laughing. Pegg is always perfect at infusing his roles with funny expressions that elicit a laugh, but Cruise, Renner and even Alec Baldwin supply comic relief as well. It’s an addition in the Drew Pearce script that makes the entire cast of characters more enjoyable to watch.

The 53 year old Cruise stated during the films world premiere in Vienna, “this movie has great popcorn filming and has what I would want in a movie“ and the response is proving that sentiment to be true. It made franchise history with its largest opening day ever and is poised to hit above the $50 million mark after this weekend. Where other Blockbusters like Jurassic World pulled in an immediate crowd based largely in part on past successes, Mission may get there a little bit more slowly as word gets out, that this could be the best installment to date.

More MI5: Watch New Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation Trailer

No need to wait for Bond to get your dose of beautiful backdrops, a world dominating villain and high flying action. From the moment the film begins, with Tom Cruise hanging off the side of an airplane as it takes off (a stunt he did himself), to aerial shots of Vienna and Morocco, to sexy co-star Ferguson – it’s all here. There may be some debate as to who fills the role of super spy better, Cruise or Craig – but no moviegoer should walk away thinking Rogue is that far behind; if not ahead.

MI5 should get both fans of the franchise and newcomers excited about the next installment, which according to Paramount could begin filming in 2016.

For now, Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation and Tom Cruise, are giving fans just what they wanted at the Summer box-office.
