A Good Movie To Watch Tonight – ‘Testament Of Youth’ Starring Alicia Vikander

Our new series ‘A Good Movie To Watch Tonight’ starts with an amazing film from earlier this year (2015) called, Testament of Youth. Based on the real memoirs of English writer and pacifist Vera Brittain, it stars the very talented Swedish actress, Alicia Vikander.

You may know Alicia from movies like Anna Karenina, The Fifth Element, Seventh Son, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Burnt and The Danish Girl.

The role of Vera’s fiancé is played by English actor Kit Harrington; best known for his role as Jon Snow in the television series, Game of Thrones.

Reasons To Watch ‘Testament of Youth’

Period Drama – Based in 1914 during the outbreak of World War I. Shows the makeup of British life at the time regarding the roles of men and woman, and the growing women’s suffrage movement.

The cinematography, costumes and set design are all executed well. Ladies will love the clothes worn by Alicia Vikander in her role as Vera.

Based On Real Events – Follows the younger years of Vera Brittain and the four men in her life who were sent off to War, including her fiancé’ and brother. Reveals the horrors of the first World War and the life that followed for those who experienced great loss.

The movie also centers on how Vera Brittain refused to fall into the expected role for a young woman of her day, her pursuit to attend Oxford and become a writer.

Romance – Although the real focus of the book the film is based on, was to point out the “life questions” that resulted in the life of Vera following the War – the Juliette Towhidi written screenplay and performance from Vikander and Harrington, delivers a touching and tangible love story.

Emotional Expectations– Prepare for moments of silence during portions of this film, when those watching may be holding back the tears. That said, this isn’t a sloppy crying, ladies only film (no offence, we know the boys cry too); guys will be able to relate as well.

There are things to be inspired about, as well as angered. Just don’t expect to break out into laughter.
